Global Village 2013 Testimonials

Written on June 28, 2013 by Campus Life in Geographic, Other Activities, Professional

“Jackie Chan once said: “We live now in a global village and we are in one single family. It’s our responsibility to bring friendship and love from all different places around the world and to live together in peace.”  IE already brings together students from around the world in its classrooms.  Global Village is where we were able to travel to each of our friends’ countries, experience their culture, and be part of their family.  Global Village will remain forever as my most cherished memory of IE.”

Carolina Schildknecht, IMBA student, Global Village coordinator (IE Net Impact Club)

“Global Village? Global Village is having a fresh Japanese ice-cream kakigori while watching Indian dances on the stage and seeing the mariachi pass by in preparation for their show. It’s receiving a small and beautiful pyramid decorated with hieroglyphics which I watch and it gazes back while I’m writing this comment. It’s when an Israeli student offers you shakshuka, yes, but also humus and pita which you have just tried at the Lebanese stand and it tasted exactly the same to you. Or when a Chinese student presents you her Japanese boyfriend and you see them so happy that you really start to believe that we must have much more in common than we could think when watching the news. And, obviously, Global Village means the best “tortilla de patatas” in the world…”

Angel Benito, Program Assistant Masters IE University, Global Village volunteer

“Global Village was the first time we actually got a chance to see everyone in their authentic clothes and taste everyone’s food. For me, this was the first time I actually saw the diversity of IE as more than just statistics.”

Esty Kashro, IMBA student, IE Israel Club Coordinator

“On a scorcher of a day, I found myself clad in IE Net Impact Global Village Crew T-shirt at the IE library, not entirely sure what I had signed myself up for. That being said, Global Village was a wonderful part of my final term at IE and a day I will remember as one of the highlights of my year in Madrid. It gave me the opportunity to meet many more people in programmes other than my own and truly recognize what it means it to be a part of the global IE community. It was fantastic to see so many people taking an afternoon out to appreciate so many different people’s senses of “normal” and was exciting to learn so much about others. A highlight of my day was working with the rest of the volunteer team and by the end of the day, feeling a sense of accomplishment that the day had been successful. I believe that there is very little that does a better job of bonding people than water fights, lots of food and laughter and a sense of mutual achievement… and Global Village provided exactly that.”

Daena D´Oliveira, MIM student, Global Village volunteer

“Global Village is a unique opportunity to get to know the culture and traditions of different nationalities that compose our student body in a relaxed and festive atmosphere. Moreover, the family members of the students also participate in the event, not only by attending it, but by participating in its organization, which allows them to feel part of the IE Community.  During this afternoon all of us – students, their family members and IE staff – feel members of the same community which respects and values multiculturalism.”

Patricia Morales, Program Coordinator-Masters IE University, Global Village volunteer

“The global village was an amazing experience. Such a rich mixture of cultures. For example, where we participated at the Saudi Arabian stand, the offering was really local. The Saudis were dressed in the local white “Thobs” and served some of their local traditional dishes. It was interesting to find that they brought an entire lamb feast placed over spiced rice cooked in “Saudi Way”. They call it “mufatah”. Moreover, they offered local dishes based on groat and wheat with lamb and vegetables and served Arabic coffee and local dates as a dessert. In addition to the food, The Saudis were explaining the culture of Saudi Arabia regarding the food and the outfits and distributed some books explaining it to the visitors.”

Tareq AlAngari, IMBA student, IE Saudi Arabia Club Coordinator

“From Azerbaijani baklava to Venezuelan arepas, exploring different cultures has never been so satisfying.”

Matthew James Roy, MIM student, Global Village volunteer

“The Global Village is probably the best opportunity to bring together our rich diversity and celebrate it together! The event is an eye-opener into how different cultures are but also showing us how similar we are at the same time. ”

Sufiyan Javeed Sait, Associate Director EMBA & GMBA, Global Village volunteer

“Global village was like travelling all around the World in no time. You go from one country to another with no boundaries! Everyone left behind them any political, economical or country relation issues and just enjoyed being in this amazing global diverse place tasting the best flavors from each country, sharing thoughts about the different cultures and, most of all, enjoying the tunes and dances that got all the attendees on their feet learning new moves.  I was proud to share my Egyptian culture and show people more about Egypt from Pharonic Era to our Modern time. It was great to make people understand that Egypt is not just about the Pyramids and camels but it has much more to offer. And I can’t wait to actually host everyone home soon!”

Hanzada Abou Youssef, MRCB student, representative of Egypt stand at Global Village

“Global Village is an event which celebrates the cultural diversity of IE through an exchange of symbols that represent the nationalities that form part of IE’s identity. All the participants showcase the richness of the culture of their home countries in a festive and relaxed atmosphere. What I really enjoyed myself was seeing how students and IE staff worked together in a perfectly organized team and made this event happen.”

Victoria Yelmo, Program Assistant EMBA & GMBA, Global Village volunteer

“Global Village has been one of the best experiences I’ve had at IE Business School. It was great being part of this amazing event that allowed me to know another side of my friends and to share with them their food, dances and traditions. A trip around the world in under 4 hours!!”

Arturo Ramírez Onaindia, IMBA student, Coordinator of Global Village (IE Net Impact Club)

“Global Village is a great way to eat your way through 30 countries in one afternoon! As a small country, with only four people in IE, we had to be creative with our stand and with a little help from our Tourist and Food boards we re-branded Irish Pie to feed the crowds. Our Irish dancing contest could only compete for effort not skill with the amazing performances from all the countries – especially the blistering set from Japan! Thanks to IE and especially Carolina and Arturo for providing the foundations for an amazing day.”

Robert O´Connor, IMBA student, representative of Ireland Stand at Global Village

“Global Village is an incredible and entertaining experience, where you have a chance to get to know live and in person the traditions, folklore and cuisine of many countries, and, moreover, make friends with people from a diverse range of places.”

Begoña Sanz, Program Assistant MBA programs, Global Village volunteer

“Global village was a pure example of a melting pot for cultures from around the globe. Signifying IE’s diversity at its finest. Passing through the stands of different cultures, I could only think of the different possibilities each culture represents and to know that each one was just steps away from another completely unique experience, was indeed an exquisite life time experience.”

Abdullah Kamal, IMBA student, IE Kuwait Club

“You don’t really notice the amount of nationalities coexisting together in IE until you participate in Global Village. In this event you meet people who were always around you but you probably never knew where they came from. They come dressed with their best traditional outfits, they smile and kindly offer you try the cuisines of their countries. These little big ambassadors from all over the world share their time and space in a joyful harmony, making you part of their roots and culture. Global Village is a reflection of the diversity and enthusiasm that you can find in the classrooms of IE, only full of colors, laughter and music.”

Alejandro Duran, Program Assistant Masters IE University, Global Village volunteer
