mountaineeringOn Sunday November 23rd, amid low cloud and drizzling rain, a few brave hikers set out to Cercedilla, the small mountainside town base for hiking the Siete Picos summits encompassed in the beautiful Sierra de Guadarrama, only an hour North of Madrid. Despite the weather, the group of three, whittled down from 8 potentials, met at Nuevos Ministerios station where there is a direct train to Cercedilla, armed with full sets of rain gear and gritty determination. On arrival, we headed North West from the station directly onto the trail head that circles the first range. The plan was to summit the nearest peak, just to our immediate West, but after a grueling elevation of 800 meters under heavy fog, the visibility dropped to just a few meters. Flummoxed but not beaten, we diverted our path to the North, tracing the lower contours of the mountain in order to stay safe, and ended up having a beautiful (albeit wet) hike of approximately 10km before heading back into Cercedilla for the train home. We passed many cows, some farmers and the odd dog walker on the path, and even got a couple of good vantage points down over the valley!

The IE mountaineering club organizes weekend hikes around Madrid and also longer expeditions to major European Summits at various times throughout the year. Please contact us or join our Facebook group if you are interested to learn more or join us for some outdoor exercise to stimulate those brain cells!
