Interview with a club: IE Social Club & IE BOTW

Written on April 2, 2013 by Campus Life in Other Activities, Social

IE Social Club CoordinatorsWho are we?

IE Social Club has a unique mission, not to stand alone, but instead to work with all other clubs at IE to recruit for events and help enhance your experience. Bar of the Week is a weekly event we host at a fun establishment in Madrid that all IE students can look forward to attending and meeting new people. Throughout your time at IE you develop very tight-knit groups with peers in your own program but this gives students exposure to like-minded students you may not otherwise meet.

Current Coordinators

Selva Dilek Oztaskin – Istanbul, Turkey- Master in Visual Media Communication
Betsy Ditrinco – Rochester, NY – Master in Visual Media Communication
Estrella Jaramillo – Córdoba, Spain – Master in Corporate Communication
Jim Rand – Vancouver, Canada – International Masters in Business Administration
Bhuvan Rustagi – Delhi, India, International Masters in Business Administration

Club Activities

As IE Social Club, our aim is to help the rest of the clubs, create an atmosphere where the students and the alumni can share their experiences and help each other. We do get-togethers weekly under the name of Bar Of The Week, so that we can meet and introduce students from different masters and also alumni who already experienced the IE student life.

Our Vision

IE Social Club Coordinators 3We are thinking about doing bigger events where we can host the maximum amount of students and alumni in special venues, doing very well prepared get-togethers. We would like to keep up to date all our contacts so in the future some students might be able to find a good match with one of them and work together in their future jobs. A company needs people from all areas, from the administration to communication, so why shouldn´t IE students count with each other while they are opening their businesses or looking for the right person in any field in the company they work for? IE Social Club´s activities are the places to meet and maintain the contact with each other. We will do our best to create the best atmosphere of friendship and hopefully this will last for long years.

Get in touch and participate!

You can contact us through IE Communities, on Facebook through the page IE Bar of the Week (BOTW) or by email for any questions regarding collaboration with the club or suggestions. We are open to any kind of suggestions about helping the other clubs, creating an event or collaborating with the get-togethers.

 Club activities

• Since we are an ‘affinity club’, we have a unique opportunity to present activities that cut across many interests, professions, industries and regions – as long as they relate to the ‘emerging markets’. We’ve been quite active these last few months. Most recently, we hosted a panel discussion on “Luxury in the BRIC Markets”, held on January 28th and featured seasoned professionals from the luxury industry representing all four BRIC markets (Brazil, Russia, India and China) companies such as Carrera & Carrera, Loewe, Louis Vuitton and Pangea 21 International Consulting. The IE blog describes the event in detail.
• On January 17th, we co-sponsored with the IE Finance Club an “Emerging Markets Client Call”. It was a unique opportunity to listen to a live investor conference call featuring HSBC analysts from New York, London and Hong Kong present their multi-asset 2013 outlook for equities, fixed income and currencies in Latin America, Asia-Pacific and Eastern Europe/Middle East/Africa.
• In November, we hosted a career and job search-related panel looking at “Expat Opportunities in China, Hong Kong and Singapore”. This panel featured guest speakers from Hudson Recruiting and the China-Spain Chamber of Commerce as well as IMBA students who have lived in Shanghai, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Photo 29-1-13 8 02 33 PMOur vision

We are now looking at two upcoming events to be held this spring. The first one will focus on Sub-Saharan African growth, and for this one we will be counting with a very special guest: a faculty member. The second event will bring a series of professionals that will unlock for us the secrets of consumer behavior in South America.

The best activities develop organically from the interests of our members, so we are always looking for ideas to help us guide and inspire our event program, so please don’t hesitate to talk any of our board members if you have any suggestions for future activities.
