Written on March 21, 2017 by Campus Life in Sports

The IE Sailing Club celebrated the 5th year of the IE Winter Regatta in Lanzarote, with temperatures reaching the 30ºC! This year the number of participants increase almost 100%, from 50 to 95 participants. Four European top business schools participated in this year’s edition: LBS, INSEAD, RSM and IE! Many beginners had the chance to try for the first time this incredible sport  that promotes team building and can be practiced at any age. Definitely it was a weekend to remember and repeat once again in 2018!! A big thank you to our sponsors: Campus Life, Global Alumni Relations and Hotel Costa Calero!

The IE Sailing club is more than a sport, it is a lifestyle!

I was hooked after being part of the Lanzarote regatta and I was excited to participate in the next one as soon as possible. The next opportunity was the IESE spring games in Barcelona, and the club was needing a Spanish speaker to help them coordinate. I was up for the challenge and thankfully the president and my crew members where always helping and made the decisions easy.Being Sailing Club Coordinator is an adventure, but it’s not all easy.  I’m talking about things like coordinating boats, skippers, transportation, accommodations (for all the crew members), transportation inside the city and then the parties. Scheduling is requires to be done weeks ahead before the event starts, which is a lot of while when added on top of the MBA.

The performance from IE at the games was amazing.

This is what happened at the games:

We had great skippers, as well crew members. After the first day (2 races) Team B was leader and Team A was in 3rd place. The weather conditions were just perfect. The next morning the wind conditions were difficult because the lack of wind. The races had to be shortened because there was going to take too much time. As the morning passed the wind kept increasing, the competition was fearless. LBS was on the chase for the gold, making great performances and finishing at the top places in almost all races. At the end Team A was able to keep up and bring back the gold for IE! Team B placed as well, bringing home the bronze. Like most things about the IE Experience, being part a part of this club will change your life not only at IE, but forever. The bonds that are created during a regatta/ armada are one of the strongest you can build; everyone on the boat is neededYou truly rely on your team members because one small mistake or “tag” decision can be the difference between winning or loosing.

Sailing is unique sport and at the end your teammates become your family I will carry my memories from the IE Sailing Club with me long after my time in Madrid has ended.

IESE Spring Games: Sailing Chapter

Written on April 25, 2016 by Campus Life in Sports

Only a few weeks ago IESE hosted once again Spring Games in Barcelona.sailing

IE Sailing club could not miss this opportunity to compete with sailors from other business schools and maybe even bring Gold Medal to IE.

sailing3This year there were ten boat from top MBA business Schools such as INSEAD, LBS and others.

IE participated on two boats and the crews consisted both of current students and alumni. Some of the sailors were experienced marineros, while others raced for the first time but everybody showed great enthusiasm and team spirit.

The regatta lasted for two days: on Saturday and Sunday. Even on the first day – on Saturday rounds IE crews showed great results – we came 1st and 3d.

sailing2In the evening we danced the night away in a night club but on Sunday morning everyone was up and ready again to compete for the Gold. The second day of the competition was even harder, low wind during the first 2 races. It was a fierce competition between LBS, IE and IESE.

As for the results….sailing4 We made it!!! IE Sailing Club won IESE Spring Games 2016 and brought home 1st and 3d places!

Big thanks to all the Students and Alumni who joined for the good vibes and amazing team work!

IE Sailing Club

This February we organized the first IE official regatta. Over 60 students and alumni from IE, LBS, INSEAD, RSM and HEC from all over the world gathered together on Lanzarote Island, Canaries to enjoy winter sailing. We’ve experienced both heavy weather, that put everyone’s skills to the test, and sunny but still windy days that allowed us to enjoy racing at a more relaxed pace.

There were two divisions. Division A sailed on more agile and competitive J/80 boats and consisted mostly of alumni. The 1st place was won by RSM team while IE got the 2nd and the 4th places in this race. The IE skippers, Santiago and Alberto, are experienced sailors who already participated in many regattas. Their crews consisted both of first-timers and alumni. Alejandro, a current student, participated in IE regatta for the first time, but he already feels at sea like at home. Thilo is another first-timer in IE regatta but he is definitely not a first-timer on a boat; he cannot get enough of sailing and impressed everyone with his genoa handling skills. sailing2

Division B used bigger and heavier sailing yachts (the ones you can actually live on) and had a mixed crew of experienced and first-time sailors. Doing it the real pirate way, with thrill of victory in the air, IE crews won not only the B division race but also proved that IE students surely know how to have a good time on the shore when the race is over.

The first place was won by the crew from IE IMBA January intake. They were sailing head to head with another boat – a mixed one, consisting of IE current students and alumni, with a skipper from INSEAD, but at the last moment took over and got the first place. The crew from MBD (Masters in Big Data) brought another trophy to IE. Even though the crew consisted mostly of beginners, they managed to overcome more experienced sailors from HEC and came the 3d.

Feeling missed out? Don’t worry; we organize different sailing events both for beginners and experienced sailors. Join sailing club on campus life  and check out sailing cruises and regattas schedule or contact anyone from the team.

And remember: Always be yourself. Unless you can be a sailor. Then always be a sailor!

(It’s highly addictive, don’t say we didn’t warn you!)
