IE Tennis Club

Written on December 15, 2017 by Campus Life in Sports

With the cold winter days arriving the IE Tennis Club is getting quieter. However, as true tennis lovers such this doesn’t discourage us to hit the court.

We have organized our session in a two-fold fashion. One is to match and meet players casually whenever it suits their calendars. The other is a tennis ladder that organises competitions amongst players acco rding to their level. Thanks to our very active member base ranging from professionals to beginners the Tennis Club is able to match players with similar levels for the ladder games. Also, we are happy that we could implement the idea for the ladder into our Club which emerged from our members itself.

Our plans are to keep practicing in the beautiful sun of Madrid after the winter break and organise more sessions with a professional trainer. We plan to bucket members according to their level so we can arrange separate courts for different levels, with or without a trainer. Another exciting target is the collective attendance of the Madrid Open taking place in May 2018.

We are very proud of our diverse community who keeps enriching the IE tennis experience and looking forward to welcome more members!

Autumn for the IE Tennis Club.. Getting ready for MBAT!

Written on December 15, 2017 by Campus Life in Sports

After a busy Autumn, the IE tennis club is looking forward to its winter physical preparation before coming back on courts early next year. Objectives lying in front of us are the MBAT 2018, which is the main sports event for Business schools held Barcelona. During the MBAT tournament, Tennis is played in the Davis cup format and gathers around 20 teams.

IE Tennis club has welcome new members from all levels this year and a new coordinators’ team is in place. Nata, Henri and Louis will replace Camille and Joseph from January 2018 onwards.

The craze for the tennis team has been quite important in the last few weeks, with players from every program gathering to play tennis together. Students from the MiM, the MiF, the IMBA, Master in Big Data etc have enjoyed the Madrid sun, playing in various locations such as Retiro, Pradillo, where the courts are of high quality.

We have also created a WhatsApp group for club members as a communication medium to meet, practice and play tennis. The group has been very active, and participants are bringing a lot of ideas. One of them concluded to bring a tennis teacher for players to level up and improve their technique.

In addition, an informal tennis championship is taking place between all members, allowing us to play in friendly competition and improve our technique and mental aptitudes.

2018, IE tennis club is coming for you !

First IE Tennis Tournament

Written on December 16, 2015 by Campus Life in Social, Sports

torneo tennisThe IE Tennis club organised the first ever IE Tennis tournament for members of the IE Tennis club ( Students & Alumni) on 5th and 6th December 2015 at Fuencarral indoor arena. As this was the first time that the club was organising a tournament we were a little apprehensive but thanks to the club coordinators (Jose Luis Lazo Visbal, Vivian Krall, Julien Somogyi, Marcos Gómez Abal, Corrado Rota Zumaglini, Lázaro Manuel Hermoso Beltrán) and their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication we managed to pull it off.  Also a special mention goes out to Vivian Krall, with whose support we were able to secure a sponsor CoppelDental for the tournament.

The surface for the tournament was “Hard-courts” and the Gentleman’s single was played in the elimination format while for the Ladies’ singles we had a round robin format. We had a surprisingly large turnout with twenty players registering to participate in the event. The group of players comprised of various nationalities true to IE’s essence and intermediate level of tennis players. The participants were treated to a goody bag on arrival at the venue to keep them hydrated and energised during the tournament and we also had prizes in the form of medals for the top 3 finishers as well as a rolling trophy for the champion.

Tennis Tournament Sponsor 1The Ladies single was won by Ciria Mariscal Vallado who dominated the tournament with Ayse Berna Bedirhan finishing the runner-up after a close fight with Xianpei pan who finished third. The men’s singles produced hard fought matches with some remarkable tennis and often scintillating points. Rob Langan took the top honours finishing first from Nicolas Diaz while Jaime Mato finished third from Jose Fernandez-Castaño.

We ended the two days of Tennis with a get together for some beers (Thank you Campus Life) and bites at the venue restaurant. The event not only gave players a chance to display their tennis skills but also to meet and get to know people who share a similar passion for tennis. We would like to thank all the participants, volunteers, supporters, our sponsor CoppelDental  and Campus life (especially Micaela Garcia-Lomas, Lynn Yates and Giedre Pavalkyte) for making this event a success. We had people come up and congratulate us on the organisation and smooth execution of the tournament and it even spurred a few to sign up to be officers in the Tennis club. We also had the sponsor Mr Antonio Fdez-Coppel Garcia (CoppelDental), a sports enthusiast himself, visit us during the tournament and he was very happy with how the tournament was run.

Learning from the organisation of this event and the feedback we received from the participants the club is looking forward to organise even bigger and better tennis events for its members going forward. Thanks to the amazing response and resounding success of this tournament the IE Tennis Club is further motivated to host many more similar events in the years ahead.

Tennis Club events 2015

Written on December 3, 2015 by Campus Life in Social, Sports

RF1After a rather quiet spell at the beginning of 2015 the Tennis club came back to life again when I took over as president of the club, starting competing at the MBAT 2015, which is the main sports event for Business schools held in HEC Paris. During the MBAT tournament, Tennis  was played in the Davis cup format and we finished 4th out of approximately 20 teams.

The Tennis club has also had new members join the board in the month of September and with them also came new initiatives. Thanks to Vivian Krall, a fellow board member, we were able to secure a 10% discount on sporting goods for the IE Tennis club members at Deportes Wimbledon store in Madrid.

We have also created a whatsapp group for club members as a communication medium to meet, practice and play tennis. It’s not surprising to say that given the passion for tennis the group has its been very active during this year.

The club is also planning to starting coaching sessions wth Andrew Raphaelson at the beginning of January, who will be joining us as an IE student.  Andrew Raphaelson has played tennis all his life, including 4 years for the University of San Diego in the United States. In addition to helping coach a number of junior and collegiate players over the years, he has also hit with many top professional players including Fernando Verdasco, Ernests Gulbis, Caroline Wozniaki, and Sorana Cirstea. Andrew has volunteered to coach IE students who are looking for assistance with improving certain aspects of their game. Given the talent pool at IE I feel we have a very good chance of bringing home Gold this time round at MBAT 2016. We are also in the process of organizing the first ever IE tennis singles tournament for gents and ladies in December 2015. I must say given the level of commitment and enthusiasm of the current board members the future of the club looks very promising.

IE Tennis Club at IESE Spring Games and MBAT

Written on January 2, 2015 by Campus Life in Sports

Ttennispost2he IESE Spring Games were held during the weekend of April 4th-6th and the IE Tennis Club had a team representing the school. We participated in two different categories: Mixed Doubles and Men´s Singles.

In the first category, we were represented by Camilo Bueno (Colombia)/Nathalia Reyes (El Salvador) and Sebastián Chacón (Colombia)/Amelia Wix (UK). They all had a great performance and the first couple defeated all their rivals, and after winning 3 different matches they got the gold medal in their category.

In Men´s Singles, we were represented by Hernán Mendivil (Peru), from the IMBA program. He ended up making it into semifinals after defeating all three adversaries in his group. Then, he made it to the final, and sadly lost that final match after 3 very exciting sets.

tennispost3This tournament was a very interesting experience because all IE teams started to prepare and generate a good cohesiveness towards the next challenge that MBAT represented.

MBAT

When May arrived, everybody was really anxious because it meant that MBAT was about to start. Many of us had heard about this tournament even before the program started, and we were told that this was one of the best experiences we will have during this year.

The IE Tennis Club sent 2 teams to compete and both of them did a great job. Tennis matches were like playing a Davis Cup, but with men and women participating at the same time. Each team was supposed to present 2 Men´s Singles, 2 Women´s Singles, 1 Men´s Doubles, 1 Women´s Doubles and 1 Mixed Doubles.

The first team was composed by Chris Holman (USA), Kunal Bisariya (USA), Santosh Mahale (India), Ricardo Ocampo (Colombia) and María Angela Cepero (Colombia). They played against LBS, Cambridge and Oxford and this team was one match away from getting to the semifinals.

tennispost1The second team was composed by Hernán Mendivil (Peru), Ryan McVicker (USA), Amelia Wix (UK) and Catalina Esparza (Colombia) and they played against RSM and HEC, defeating both teams and making it into the semifinals. They then played against Oxford and got to play the final against Insead. Finally, they got us the silver medal of the tennis tournament.

Although most of the tennis matches were held off campus because of the rain, this was an incredible experience for bonding with every IE team. The IE spirit had a great presence amongst all activities that took place that weekend.
