We often are taught at IE Business School how to start new businesses, but most of the times these exercises remain dreambooks with financial projections and business models, which will never find a real implementation.
The re-start-up of the operations club after a period of quiescence was a real life exercise, which gave me a flavour of a real start-up!
I was not alone in this exercise and I was not even the first one to accept this challenge from Professor Angel Diaz. I was, though, the first IMBA student, who decided to join a group of three brave MIMs, who had just re-initiated the activity of the operations club: Marcos Arismendy Gomez Espinal, Nicole Guillante, and Valentina Castro Oviedo.
I first met them at the end of 2014, exactly on 24/11/2014 at the IE club fair, but we could not speak too much in that occasion, because of the crowd and the confusion.
We had shortly the possibility to meet, in order to plan the new activities of the reborn operations club.
We were not starting from scratch, but it was difficult to recompose the pieces of what had been done in the past. The professor Angel Diaz helped us greatly stimulating with ideas, opening his almost endless book of contacts and directing our priorities.
Shortly also Luca Amadei joined the group and facilitated the organization especially of the Airbus visit due to his experience in the field.
Results of our planning activities up to now have been: the organization of a professional forum with the Santander Operations Vice President exposing the strategy of his company in terms of operations management (22/01/2015), lean service workshop (17/02/2015), Airbus factory visit (05/03/2015), Danone Factory Visit (28/04/2015).
Apart from factory visits, the club has worked on the development of a place where to exchange professional experiences over operations, for professional working in the field and it is now ready to be launched for the .
Being able to organize all these activities is pretty impressive in a short period of time and we need certainly to thank the commitment of all the club participants and of Angel Diaz for his continuous support and stimulus. There is always room for improvement, but it is really positive to do it starting from the current point.
Now that Luca and I are graduating, the club is managing to attract new officers, Valerio Cifola and Rohan Trikha, two IMBAs from November 2014 Intake, to help out in the organization of the activities.
I encourage who is interested into operations to get in contact with the current officers and/or to search for Operations club in the https://clubs.ie.edu so that you can get information on the club current and future activities.
