USA Club Independence Day Potluck!

Written on July 16, 2018 by Campus Life in Geographic

The 4th of July is a very important federal holiday for Americans. On July 4th 1776, the thirteen American colonies declared independence from the British Empire as the United States of America. Today, the day is typically celebrated by gathering with friends and family at an outdoor barbecue with patriotic decorations and the evening concludes with a beautiful fireworks display.

In order to share this special tradition with IE students and friends and help our members feel at home, the USA Club hosted a potluck picnic in El Parque del Buen Retiro. The event was organized by Sara Powell with the support of the other board members. We asked our members to bring their favorite, classic 4th of July dishes to share with others like hot dogs, apple pie, and watermelon. In the American and IE spirit, we also encouraged friends from other countries to attend so we could share our tradition but also enjoy favorite dishes from their countries as well.

The event started in the afternoon and the celebration went until almost midnight as friend enjoyed food, drinks, classic American music, and played games. It was a great success with a turnout of over 50 attendees. Although we were not with our families, we were all still grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the 4th of July amongst our IE community.
