2014-04-02 16.56.11On April 2nd, the IE Israel Club had the honor to host Venture Capital guest speakers. Yuval Avni, partner at GizaVC and Veronica Trapa, Managing director at Swanlaab. Founded in 1992, GizaVC is one of the leading VC firms in Israel. Swanlaab is a Spanish VC firm aiming to help Spanish start-ups to scale up. It was established as a joint venture between GizaVC and IVC – a Spanish consulting group.

In the session, Yuval and Veronica discussed the Venture Capital industry, the ecosystem in Israel and Spain, opportunities and how-to’s. We learned how a VC firm builds a portfolio, assess risks and most importantly, creates value for their investors and investees.

2014-04-02 16.17.38The ongoing economic crisis has created opportunities in Spain for entrepreneurs. High unemployment rate, combined with good engineering education and relatively low-cost engineers compared to other places, have led young people to an immigrate-or-innovate approach – the latter appearing as more attractive. Furthermore, government incentives for investors and entrepreneurs also fertilize the ecosystem. Yuval and Veronica also explained that there is an equity gap in Spain, providing opportunities for venture capital firms, which are investing between three to nine million dollars per venture.
